From the year 1831 until the last school closed its doors in 1996, about 150,000 Frist Nation, Inuit and Metis children were removed from their families and communities and forced to attend residential schools. These schools were funded by the Canadian government and at first were administered by the Christian churches. The purpose of these schools was to educate and convert Indigenous youth. This translated into taking their names, identities, language and culture away from them in order to eliminate all aspects of Indigenous culture. The conditions in these schools were so poor that many of these children were abused, malnourished and died alone and away from their families. To this day, we are not certain how many children (some as young as 3 years of age) died in the residential schools as the accurate records were not kept. With the discovery of 215 children in a mass grave at one of these residential schools in Kamloops BC, this part of Canadian story has been brought forward once again. We would encourage everyone to educate themselves about this recent part of our history and extend our support to the many families that are dealing with the impact of attending residential schools today. The charities that are a part of this fund provide such support. Donations made through this fund will be matched 100% (50% by the Campbell Soup Foundation and 50% by Campbell Canada up to a max of $10K)

In the past two weeks, we’ve seen a tremendous rise in anti-Semitism around the world. There have been numerous incidents of violence in NYC, California, London, and globally. Even within our own employee community, we’ve received reports of vandalism and hate speech inflicting fear and terror upon us and our loved ones. We cannot allow this kind of hate to continue, and must act to support this community, as Braze often stands with many other communities that experience hatred and discrimination. The Jews @ Braze ERG (#jab-erg) has been active for numerous years in support of Jewish life around the world. This violence against Jews cannot go unseen. No one should be targeted for their religious beliefs or cultural identity, or should be uncomfortable leaving their homes or loved ones. Colorado Ballet’s 60th Anniversary season was originally scheduled to open October 9, 2020 with eight performances of Giselle and continue in November and December with 26 performances of The Nutcracker. Ticketing revenue from these two productions was projected to be between $3.5 and $4M. All of these performances were cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Artists have been furloughed and their 2021 Spring season is at risk. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Colorado Ballet will depend on fundraising as its primary source of income for the remainder of 2020. In light of this extreme need, Colorado Ballet announces the launch of its Relief and Recovery Fund. With a fundraising goal of $3 million, this fund will help to cover a significant portion of the loss of ticketed revenue, helping Colorado Ballet to retain its world-class dancers and staff and emerge from this crisis as the strong company it has become over the past 60 years.

Providing excellent programs at Music Center of the Northwest also requires technology to connect with our students, families, donors, and the larger Seattle community. These are challenging times, but individual and group music lesson participation have increased during stay-at-home, and our instructors are getting creative with online tech. We are also setting up a video rig to easily livestream recitals and concerts from Music Center, and exploring the use of VMware software like Horizon to support virtual work. Help me fund some much-needed hardware upgrades for our office staff, instructors, and executive director. Thank you!
