Advancing social justice in AAPI communities

On June 19, 1865 -- a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued -- news of the end of slavery finally reached Texas. Since then, Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day, has become a time to recognize and celebrate the culture, contributions, and achievements of African Americans. Early celebrations often served a dual purpose as political rallies to give voting instructions to newly freed enslaved peoples. However, in the early 20th century, economic and political forces led to a decline in Juneteenth celebrations due to state laws and amendments being passed that disenfranchised Black people and excluded them from voting, such as the Jim Crow laws. The Civil Rights Movement re-invigorated the holiday. Last year, in the midst of several high-profile deaths of Black men at the hands of police, Juneteenth started to become more widely known and its significance particularly important. Systemic racism continues to plague the United States, and the struggle for true Black liberation continues to this day. This Juneteenth, join us in supporting organizations that continue to work on dismantling white supremacy and eliminating systemic racism. The 2021 Juneteenth Fund is composed of nonprofits with missions that address these complex, pervasive relics of oppression through education, policy, advocacy, and access to quality healthcare and other direct services.

In the summer of 1969, police raided a gay bar in New York City; the riots that ensued were a major turning point for the fight for gay rights in the United States. Since June 1970, LGBTQ+ folks, along with activists, advocates, and allies have continued to gather together in June to march with Pride. While there are still many obstacles the LGBTQ+ community faces, significant progress has been made over the past few decades. The 2021 Pride Fund supports organizations that promote the safety and advance the wellbeing of the LGBTQ+ community through advocacy, direct services, health accessibility, education, legal representation, and public policy changes. Through a single donation to the Fund, you can support multiple organizations' initiatives working to ensure acceptance, equity, and justice for all.

Every year between November 13th - 19th, the week before Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th, people and organizations around the world participate in Transgender Awareness Week to help increase visibility about the Trans experience, celebrate triumphs and address hardships members of the community face. Transgender Day of Remembrance is an annual observance that honors the memory of the Trans people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-Transgender violence. Devastatingly, 2021 marks the deadliest year recorded with at least 46 Transgender people killed in the US alone. This week and every week, we need to work together to advance advocacy against the prejudice, discrimination, and violence affecting the Trans community. This is also a time to celebrate Trans joy, resilience, and victories, to pause to honor the history of Trans activism and welcome informed allies. As COVID-19 cases began to appear in the U.S. in early 2020, violence against Asians and Asian-Americans began to increase. Since then, amplified nationalism, bigotry, and the spread of misinformation has contributed to a surge in cases of verbal harassment, physical assault leading to serious injury or even death, as well as civil-rights violations. Join InPAC (Intuitive Pan-Asian Community) employee resource group in advocating for justice, fairness, and inclusion for AAPI (Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders) communities and allies across the country. By helping these organizations in the fight against racism, hate, and xenophobia, we can make real progress in building inclusive communities, raising awareness for Asian minorities, and promoting advancement and growth for people of all backgrounds.

The recent acts of violence against Pan-Asian communities around the world has put some serious issues into the forefront of our social consciousness. Let's all continue to come together in solidarity and to support one another. Knowing that there are a growing number of allies working for inclusion into Asian communities, we will raise some funds to assist these efforts through some hilarity and funky facial hair.

Over the past few months, there has been an increase in violence against Asian Americans. Just yesterday, eight people, mostly Asian American women were killed in an attack that is being investigated as a hate crime. We condemn the Anti-Asian violence and stand with our Asian colleagues and the Asian-American Community. We're highlighting these organizations to provide immediate support to the Asian Community.

Violence against specific groups or races is not a new phenomenon in America; in early 2020, as COVID-19 cases began to appear in the U.S., violence against Asians and Asian-Americans began to increase. On January 21, 2023, a deadly mass shooting occurred at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park, California. To date, ten victims have died and at least ten others are injured. The shooting occurred during the city's first night of Lunar New Year festivities, one of the most important annual celebrations within Eastern and Southeastern Asian communities. Bright Funds stands in solidarity with the Asian community and strongly condemns racism, hate, and xenophobia of any kind. While the Women@VMware POD works towards creating an inclusive culture and empowering women employees internally, we also feel the need to help the world outside. The Women@VMware Women's Empowerment Fund supports a curated set of organizations working towards gender equality and advancement of women worldwide. Your donations to this fund will help support all women in getting access to quality education, health care and sustainable livelihood opportunities and training. This fund is being launched to commemorate Women's History Month in March and seeks to empower more women, so they can lead healthy, successful and dignified lives.

International Women's Day (IWD), observed annually on March 8, is a worldwide celebration of women’s achievements. It offers an opportunity to reflect on progress made, to call for change, and to honor acts of courage and determination by women who have helped in moving the needle toward gender parity within their countries and communities. This year’s theme is #ChooseToChallenge, which highlights the importance of challenging biases and misconceptions in the interest of creating a more inclusive world. International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The Morningstar's Women's Initiative UK has chosen to mark this day in 2021 by fundraising for female-focused charities. Thank you for your contribution!

The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, led by The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., was a pivotal time in our nation’s history and has had far-reaching repercussions. Modern movements for racial justice and equality, like the Black Lives Matter movement, are extensions of the work that he started. The protests against systemic racism in 2020 and the insurrection at the beginning of 2021 have proven that the fight for civil rights is far from complete. MLK Day, celebrated nationally on January 18, is a day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s mission, life, and legacy. The holiday, often referred to as “a day on, not a day off,” is dedicated to volunteerism, encouraging people everywhere to reflect and take action in their communities. The call to action on this day is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions for some of our most pressing social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.” Dr. King led the charge to demand the most basic of human rights -- civil rights -- and there are plenty of opportunities to contribute. This Fund is comprised of nonprofit organizations that are fighting for social justice in the U.S. and around the world. 2020 has been a long and challenging year. It has brought a lot of changes to the world and it has been particularly hard on certain communities. In general, it is said that when you contribute to others, your own happiness tends to increase. There are people all over the world, including in Japan where we live, who are in need of volunteers and support. In these difficult times, we need support in embodying our Conscious Culture (self-awareness, understanding of others, and creating the best possible experience through constant focus and intentional action on the impact we have on others (teams, customers and the larger community).
